I am currently working with
Minnesota-based longboard
manufacturers Northern Pine
Longboards to develop a series of
several new board concepts. Previously
a garage-based business that has
grown into a manufacturing facility and
the ability to add heat-transfer graphics,
NPL wanted to up the appeal of their
product with eye-popping graphics and
bright colors.
The company, as part of its brand, still
likes to have as much of the raw, natural
wood of their hand-shaped decks show
through the graphic whenever possible,
so I've kept that in mind when creating
my designs.
Thematically, I not only riff on the
shape/model name ("The Derby", "The
Slingblade", "The Naughty Pine") to find
inspiration for the art concepts, but also
adhering strictly to NPL's love for the
North woods and all things natural by
using woodland animals and creatures
(Bigfoot, a black bear and a pinup girl
with a stag head) as the stars of the
boards.
Additionally, I put a fresh spin on the
company's identity with a new logo for all
boards bearing my designs, and some
transferal of the board graphics to a
matching apparel line.
